Achromatic linear retarder with tunable retardance.
We developed a tunable linear retarder with uniform wavelength response across a wide spectrum. This optical device, comprising wave retarders, allows continuous polarization control for applications like supercontinuum lasers.
Area of Science:
- Optics and Photonics
- Materials Science
Background:
- Polarization control is crucial in various optical systems.
- Existing tunable retarders often lack broadband, uniform performance.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present a universal design for a tunable linear retarder with uniform wavelength response.
- To demonstrate a proof-of-concept for this novel retarder design.
Main Methods:
- The design utilizes two half-wave retarders (HWRs) positioned between two quarter-wave retarders (QWRs).
- Tunability is achieved by rotating one of the HWRs.
- Commercial Fresnel rhomb retarders were used for the proof-of-concept, offering broadband performance.
Main Results:
- The constructed retarder demonstrated continuous tunability of retardance.
- The system exhibited uniform wavelength response from 450 to 1550 nm.
- Experimental control over the polarization state of a supercontinuum laser was achieved.
Conclusions:
- The proposed universal design offers a simple yet effective method for tunable polarization control.
- This design is adaptable for various achromatic wave retarders, enhancing its applicability.
- The proof-of-concept validates the system's capability for broadband polarization manipulation.
