Background:

  • Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease.
  • Cardiovascular complications are a concern in AS patients.

Observation:

  • This study evaluated endothelial dysfunction using ultrasonography in 140 AS patients.
  • Lipid profiles and clinical parameters were assessed.
  • Correlations between endothelial dysfunction and disease parameters were identified.

Findings:

  • Endothelial dysfunction was more pronounced in AS patients.
  • It significantly correlated with inflammatory markers (hs-CRP), age, disease duration, and severity.
  • AS patients presented a pro-atherogenic lipid profile and early atherosclerotic lesions.

Implications:

  • Management should address chronic inflammation and lipid profiles.
  • Early detection of atherosclerotic lesions is crucial.
