Summary

Post-weaning social isolation in rats increased aggressiveness and cognitive deficits. Gene expression changes, particularly in the serotonergic system and prolyl endopeptidase, suggest involvement in these mental health disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying behavioral changes induced by social isolation.
  • To identify candidate genes involved in the pathogenesis of isolation-induced mental disorders.

Main Methods:

  • Male Wistar rats were subjected to 10 weeks of social isolation.
  • Behavioral assessments included aggressiveness, sensorimotor reactivity, and cognitive function (acoustic startle response).
  • Gene expression analysis of key enzymes and transporters in various brain regions was performed using mRNA levels.

Main Results:

  • Social isolation led to increased aggressiveness, sensorimotor reactivity, and cognitive deficits.
  • Elevated expression of prolyl endopeptidase (EC 3.4.21.26) in the frontal cortex was observed.

Conclusions:
