Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine02:50

Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine

6.1K
Combining two or more treatment methods increases the life span of cancer patients while reducing damage to vital organs or tissue from the overuse of a single treatment. Combination therapy also targets different cancer-inducing pathways, thus reducing the chances of developing resistance to treatment.
The combination of the drug acetazolamide and sulforaphane is a good example of combination therapy to treat cancer. The cells in the interior of a large tumor often die due to the hypoxic and...

Combined Effects of Drugs: Synergism

6.9K
Synergism is a useful mechanism where combining two or more drugs is more effective than each constituent used alone. Such combinations are also called supra-additive interactions. The drugs collectively enhance the final therapeutic effect by acting on different targets. Another advantage is that the low dose of each constituent drug is sufficient to achieve the desired effect. This helps reduce the duration of therapy and lower the adverse effects of these drugs.
Such synergistic combinations...

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease II: Clinical Features and Management

933
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a persistent medical condition that affects many individuals worldwide. Its clinical manifestations can vary greatly, making diagnosis and management challenging for healthcare professionals. The following is a comprehensive overview of the clinical manifestations, assessment, and management strategies for GERD.
Clinical Manifestations
GERD presents itself in a multitude of ways, with symptoms varying from person to person. The hallmark symptoms are...

Combined Effects of Drugs: Antagonism

11.7K
The combined effects of drugs can result in various interactions, of which an important type is antagonism. Antagonism is a mechanism where one drug inhibits or counteracts the effects of another drug. Antagonism can occur through various means, including receptor binding, allosteric modulation, functional interaction, chemical reactions, and pharmacokinetic processes.
The most common type is receptor antagonism, where one drug acts as an antagonist to block the effects of another drug by...

Gene Therapy00:59

Gene Therapy

27.6K
Gene therapy is a technique where a gene is inserted into a person’s cells to prevent or treat a serious disease. The added gene may be a healthy version of the gene that is mutated in the patient, or it could be a different gene that inactivates or compensates for the patient’s disease-causing gene. For example, in patients with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) due to a mutation in the gene for the enzyme adenosine deaminase, a functioning version of the gene can be...

Design Consideration01:22

Design Consideration

571
Designing a structure involves a series of considerations, primarily the material's ultimate strength, calculated through tests that measure changes under increased force until the material reaches its breaking point or limit. The ultimate load, where the material breaks, is divided by its original cross-sectional area, resulting in the ultimate normal stress or strength. The ultimate shearing stress is another significant factor taken into account.
The factor of safety is another key...

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Dermatology
    • Vaccinology

    Background:

    • Migrating erythema is associated with specific immune dysregulations.
    • Understanding the interplay between innate and adaptive immunity is crucial for effective treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the clinical effectiveness of combined therapy using the Immunovac vaccine in patients with migrating erythema.
    • To analyze the dynamics of immunological parameters following Immunovac therapy.

    Main Methods:

    • 37 adult patients with migrating erythema were enrolled.
    • Patients received either Immunovac with basic therapy or doxycycline alone.
    • Immune parameters including phagocytic activity, TLR expression, lymphocyte subpopulations, cytokines, and immunoglobulins were assessed using flow cytometry and EIA.

    Main Results:

    • Patients with migrating erythema exhibited elevated TLR expression on skin and blood cells, low CD95+ and CD25+ levels, high pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4), and increased total IgE.
    • Immunovac therapy significantly increased CD95+ and CD25+ expression, boosted IFN-γ synthesis, and markedly reduced total IgE levels compared to basic therapy.

    Conclusions:

    • Incorporating the Immunovac vaccine into the treatment regimen for migrating erythema enhances clinical effectiveness.
    • Immunovac therapy effectively corrects underlying immunological disorders associated with migrating erythema.
