Thyroid dysfunction, including hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, disrupts metabolism and causes oxidative stress. This study reveals distinct oxidative stress markers in patients based on thyroid function and autoimmune thyroiditis presence.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Metabolic Disorders
- Oxidative Stress Research
Background:
- Hormonal imbalances in thyroid dysfunction disrupt metabolic processes.
- Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism contribute to an imbalanced prooxidant-antioxidant system, leading to oxidative stress.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate oxidative stress markers in patients undergoing thyroid surgery.
- To correlate oxidative stress with thyroid gland functional activity and the presence of autoimmune thyroiditis.
Main Methods:
- Assessed lipid peroxidation intensity via diene conjugates and malondialdehyde levels.
- Measured antioxidant system activity by analyzing red blood cell levels of catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase.
Main Results:
- Specific patterns in lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme activity were observed, varying with thyroid gland functional states.
- Distinct oxidative stress profiles were identified based on the presence or absence of autoimmune thyroiditis.
Conclusions:
- Thyroid functional status and autoimmune thyroiditis significantly influence oxidative stress markers.
- Metabolic disturbances in thyroid pathology, particularly with hormonal imbalance and autoimmune thyroiditis, result in chronic endogenous intoxication.
