Quantitative X-ray phase-contrast imaging (XPCI) using synchrotron radiation (SR) shows improved contrast for breast imaging. This study demonstrates the feasibility of XPCI in mammography with potential for optimized dose and enhanced image quality.
Area of Science:
- Medical Imaging
- Biophysics
- Materials Science
Background:
- Synchrotron radiation (SR) X-ray sources offer enhanced soft-tissue contrast in medical imaging, particularly for mammography.
- Quantitative X-ray phase-contrast imaging (XPCI) leverages propagation-dependent phase changes for improved image detail.
Purpose of the Study:
- To demonstrate the feasibility of quantitative X-ray phase-contrast imaging (XPCI) for mammography.
- To evaluate the performance of XPCI using breast tissue-equivalent phantoms with SR X-ray beams.
Main Methods:
- Phantom feasibility study conducted at the Indus-2 synchrotron facility (RRCAT).
- Absorption and phase mode imaging performed using 12 and 16 keV SR X-ray beams.
- Edge-enhancement index (EEI) and edge enhancement to noise ratio (EE/N) quantified; absorbed dose calculated.
Main Results:
- Phase mode imaging yielded higher EEI and EE/N values compared to absorption mode for all phantoms.
- Absorbed doses to air were measured at 75.59 mGy (12 keV) and 28.9 mGy (16 keV).
Conclusions:
- XPCI is feasible for mammography using 12 and 16 keV SR X-ray beams.
- Image acquisition time can be optimized to reduce dose without compromising quality for clinical samples.

Phase Contrast and Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy
In-phase-contrast microscopes, interference between light directly passing through a cell and light refracted by cellular components is used to create high-contrast, high-resolution images without staining. It is the oldest and simplest type of microscope that creates an image by altering the wavelengths of light rays passing through the specimen. Altered wavelength paths are created using an annular stop in the condenser. The annular stop produces a hollow cone of...
