Unusual results are those that have a very low chance of occurring. Unusual results can be identified using probabilities and the range rule of thumb. In problems involving probability, unusual results can be observed in 2 instances – an unusually high number of successes or an unusually low number of successes.

Background:

Ochrobactrum anthropi (formerly Achromobacter) is an aerobic, Gram-negative bacillus found in diverse environments.
It is an emerging opportunistic pathogen, frequently linked to healthcare-associated infections and infections in immunocompromised populations, especially neonates and children.
The clinical presentation of O. anthropi infections is often non-specific, complicating diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

To report a case of Ochrobactrum anthropi bloodstream infection in a pediatric patient with a neurodegenerative disorder.
To underscore the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges associated with O. anthropi infections.

Main Methods:

Blood cultures were used for the isolation and identification of O. anthropi.
Clinical data from a 13-year-old female patient with a neurodegenerative disorder were reviewed.

Main Results:

Ochrobactrum anthropi was successfully isolated from the blood cultures of the patient.
The patient had a complex medical history including a neurodegenerative disorder.

Conclusions:

Ochrobactrum anthropi presents significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to difficulties in identification and its inherent broad-spectrum antibiotic resistance.
This case emphasizes the need for increased awareness and effective management strategies for O. anthropi infections, particularly in vulnerable patient groups.
