A new modular laboratory course, based on course-based undergraduate research experiences, successfully engaged more students in authentic scientific research. Students gained essential research skills, improved critical thinking, and increased confidence in scientific investigation.
Area of Science:
- Developmental Biology
- Genetics
- Molecular Biology
Background:
- Undergraduate research offers valuable scientific engagement but faces limitations in scale at large institutions.
- A modular course-based undergraduate research experiences (CURE) model was developed to broaden student participation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To integrate authentic research into a modular laboratory course focused on planarian regeneration.
- To enhance students' scientific skills, critical thinking, and communication abilities.
Main Methods:
- Students identified and cloned genes involved in planarian biology.
- Gene expression patterns were determined using in situ hybridization.
- Gene function in regeneration was examined through experimental manipulation.
Main Results:
- Students successfully generated high-quality primary data and achieved course learning outcomes.
- Participants developed practical research skills, including experimental troubleshooting and literature analysis.
- Students demonstrated increased confidence and proficiency in independent scientific research.
Conclusions:
- The modular CURE model effectively accommodates a larger number of students in authentic research.
- The course fosters critical thinking, scientific communication, and practical research competencies.
- This adaptable course design can be implemented across diverse educational settings to enhance undergraduate science education.
