- Colony-forming efficiency (CFE) was assayed in 37 patients with stage I-II PCM (21 exposed to radiation, 16 not exposed) and 20 healthy controls.
- CFE of granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming units (CFU-GM) and fibroblast colony-forming units (CFU-F) were measured at diagnosis and during remission.
- Statistical analysis was performed to correlate CFE with disease stage, remission status, and patient lifespan.

- BM CFU-GM and CFU-F levels were significantly lower in PCM patients compared to controls, and decreased with advancing disease stage.
- CFE increased significantly in patients who achieved remission, approaching control levels.
- No significant difference in CFE was observed between irradiated and non-irradiated PCM patients.
- CFE of BM CFU-GM before polychemotherapy was a significant predictor of patient lifespan (Ro = 0.39, p < 0.02).

- Bone marrow cell CFE is dependent on the stage of PCM and the presence or absence of remission.
- CFE, particularly of BM CFU-GM, demonstrates prognostic value for PCM patient survival.
- Patients with a CFE > 20 before chemotherapy have a significantly longer lifespan compared to those with CFE < 20.
