Summary

Electronic screening improved adolescent counseling rates but had a modest impact on health risk behaviors. Further research is needed to find effective strategies for reducing adolescent risk behaviors during well-care visits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of the electronic tool on clinician counseling delivery and adolescent risk behaviors over time.
  • This study aimed to determine if an electronic screening tool could improve counseling and reduce risk behaviors in adolescents.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial was conducted in five pediatric clinics.
  • 300 adolescents (aged 13-18) were randomized to either the electronic screening intervention or usual care.
  • Outcomes included adolescent-reported counseling receipt (1 day post-visit) and health risk behavior changes (3 and 6 months post-visit).

  • Adolescents in the intervention group were 36% more likely to report receiving counseling for risk behaviors.
