Summary

Orbital teratoma, a rare congenital tumor, can rapidly threaten infant vision. Surgical removal of this mature teratoma in an infant achieved good cosmetic results, though vision was not preserved.

Background:

  • Orbital teratomas are rare congenital tumors originating from all three germ cell layers.
  • These tumors present in neonates with unilateral proptosis, potentially leading to optic nerve compromise and vision loss.
  • While mature teratomas are benign, immature teratomas carry a risk of malignant transformation.

Observation:

  • A six-month-old female infant presented with a mature orbital teratoma present since birth.
  • The tumor caused rapid proptosis, compromising vision.
  • Globe conservation was challenging due to the advanced stage of the tumor.

Findings:

  • Complete surgical excision of the mature orbital teratoma was performed.
  • Despite complete removal, vision could not be salvaged in the affected eye.
