Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Background:

Specific language impairment (SLI) is a developmental disorder affecting language acquisition.
Emotional and behavioral disorders are common in children but their comorbidity with SLI requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the prevalence and nature of emotional and behavioral disorders in children diagnosed with SLI.
To compare the emotional and behavioral profiles of children with SLI to a control group.

Main Methods:

A study group of 60 children aged 4-6 years with specific expressive language impairment was assessed.
Emotional and behavioral disorders were evaluated using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, SNAP-IV scale, and a specialized questionnaire.
Speech disorder severity was objectively measured using 10-point scales for speech comprehension, vocabulary, and grammatical structure.

Main Results:

A significant comorbidity of speech and behavioral disorders was observed in 61.7% of children with SLI.
Children with SLI demonstrated notably higher rates of attention deficits, hyperactivity, and peer relationship challenges compared to controls.
The co-occurrence of SLI and behavioral disorders was associated with a more severe trajectory of speech impairment.

Conclusions:

Behavioral disorders are frequently associated with specific language impairment in young children.
SLI is linked to increased attention problems, hyperactivity, and social difficulties with peers.
Combined SLI and behavioral disorders negatively impact the overall prognosis and severity of speech development.
