  • To identify commonalities in defined measurements across existing operating room (OR) nontechnical skills (NTS) assessment tools.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed, searching from May 2009 to May 2019.
  • Keywords included teamwork, assessment, surgery, operating room, and nontechnical skills.
  • Three reviewers identified common components across 10 selected OR NTS assessment tools, collating similar constructs.

Main Results:

  • The review identified 10 assessment tools evaluating OR NTS from 24 included articles.
  • Common constructs were grouped into six primary NTS categories.
  • The most frequent categories were communication, situation awareness, teamwork, leadership, decision making, and task management/decision making.

Conclusions:

  • Existing OR NTS assessment tools exhibit variations in constructs but show thematic cohesion across six main NTS groupings.
  • This synthesized information provides a foundation for developing a user-friendly assessment tool.
  • Future development aims to support debriefing in clinical settings.
