A new compact laser absorption spectrometer was developed for detecting phosphate in water using the malachite green method. This miniaturized system integrates organic distributed feedback lasers for on-chip optofluidic applications.
Area of Science:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Spectroscopy
- Optoelectronics
Background:
- Traditional water quality monitoring often relies on complex laboratory equipment.
- Miniaturization of analytical instruments is crucial for portable and on-site testing.
- Colorimetric detection methods offer a sensitive approach for analyte quantification.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a novel, compact laser absorption spectrometer for colorimetric detection.
- To demonstrate the system's capability for phosphate measurement in water samples.
- To explore the integration of organic distributed feedback lasers for miniaturized spectrometers.
Main Methods:
- Development of an optically pumped organic second-order distributed feedback (DFB) laser.
- Integration of the DFB laser onto a transparent substrate with encapsulation.
- Utilizing both emission directions of the surface-emitting laser for intensity monitoring.
- Application of the malachite green (MG) method for phosphate detection.
Main Results:
- Successful realization of a compact laser absorption spectrometer.
- Demonstrated phosphate detection in water samples within a concentration range of 1 mg/L to 31.25 μg/L.
- Showcased the miniaturizability and ease of integration of organic DFB lasers.
- Enabled monitoring of emitted light intensity without additional optical components.
Conclusions:
- The developed photometer paves the way for optofluidic on-chip absorption spectrometers.
- The system's design allows for significant miniaturization of laser absorption spectrometer setups.
- This technology enables efficient and portable measurement of analytes like phosphate.
