Social Psychology and Individual Behavior01:29

Social Psychology and Individual Behavior

17
Social psychology examines how group dynamics, emotions, and cultural influences shape individual actions and decision-making. These elements interact to form behavioral patterns that affect personal choices and social interactions. The Role of Group DynamicsGroups play a crucial role in shaping behavior by reinforcing norms and expectations. Individuals derive a sense of self from group membership, often aligning their behaviors with group norms to maintain social cohesion. For example, an...

Social Exchange Theory

35.9K
We have discussed why we form relationships, what attracts us to others, and different types of love. But what determines whether we are satisfied with and stay in a relationship? One theory that provides an explanation is social exchange theory. According to social exchange theory, we act as naïve economists in keeping a tally of the ratio of costs and benefits of forming and maintaining a relationship with others (Rusbult & Van Lange, 2003).

Steps in Outbreak Investigation

241
In the ever-evolving field of public health, statistical analysis serves as a cornerstone for understanding and managing disease outbreaks. By leveraging various statistical tools, health professionals can predict potential outbreaks, analyze ongoing situations, and devise effective responses to mitigate impact. For that to happen, there are a few possible stages of the analysis:

Factors Affecting Illness01:18

Factors Affecting Illness

4.5K
When a person's physical, emotional, intellectual, social development or spiritual functioning is compromised, this deviation from a healthy normal state is called illness. Illness creates stress that in turn harms individuals. Irritation, anger, denial, hopelessness, and fear are behavioral and emotional changes an individual experiences in the phases of illness. A variety of factors influence a person's health and well-being.
For instance, risk factors are connected to illness,...

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia01:29

Psychological and Sociocultural Causes of Schizophrenia

216
Schizophrenia, a complex psychiatric disorder, has been historically misunderstood. Early psychological theories attributed its origins to childhood trauma and unresponsive parenting. However, contemporary research largely rejects these notions, favoring the vulnerability-stress hypothesis. This model proposes that individuals with a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia may develop the disorder following exposure to significant environmental stressors. Notably, studies on high-risk...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques VI

73
Adopting a healthier lifestyle often requires overcoming significant challenges, but leveraging psychological, social, and cultural resources can facilitate meaningful change. Effective self-change hinges on understanding and applying key tools such as motivation and goal setting, which help sustain efforts toward long-term health benefits.
Motivation and Self-Determination
Motivation, the driving force behind behavior, plays a pivotal role at every stage of the change process. The research...

Summary

Personal conviction, positive attitudes, and family support significantly predict the behavioral intention to stay under lockdown (BIKL). Civic responsibility and governmental control also positively influence compliance with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) containment measures.

Area of Science:

  • Social Psychology
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Lockdowns are a key strategy for controlling the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).
  • Understanding factors influencing adherence to lockdown measures is crucial for effective public health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify key predictors of the behavioral intention to stay under lockdown (BIKL).
  • To apply the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and infection indicators to predict lockdown adherence.

Main Methods:

  • A correlational, comparative, repeated measures study was conducted with 315 participants in Mexico.
  • Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the relationships between TPB components and BIKL.

Main Results:

  • Attitude (β = 0.71), behavioral control (β = 0.24), and subjective norm (β = 0.14) significantly predicted BIKL, explaining 47% of the variance.
  • Model fit indices indicated a well-fitting structural equation model (e.g., RMSEA = 0.06).

Conclusions:

  • Personal and familial factors, including civic responsibility and positive attitudes, strongly support lockdown maintenance.
  • Governmental control and supportive contexts positively impact the intention to comply with lockdown measures.
