Summary

Nasal exercises targeting nasal muscles did not improve nasal obstruction symptoms in a randomized controlled trial. Facial muscle exercises also showed no significant benefit compared to nasal exercises for nasal obstruction.

Background:

  • Nasal valve obstruction can impact breathing and quality of life.
  • Muscular exercises targeting the lateral nasal wall are proposed as a treatment.
  • Evidence supporting the efficacy of these exercises is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of nasal muscle exercises versus facial muscle exercises in improving nasal obstruction.
  • To compare outcomes using a randomized controlled trial design.

Main Methods:

  • Participants were randomized into two groups: nasal muscle exercises (Group A) or facial muscle exercises (Group B).
  • Nasal obstruction was assessed using the Standardized Cosmesis and Health Nasal Outcomes Survey (SCHNOS) at baseline and after 8 weeks.
  • Fifty-six patients completed the study.

Main Results:

  • Both groups showed some improvement in SCHNOS scores, but no statistically significant difference was found between nasal and facial exercises.
  • Group A (nasal exercises) showed a 3-point improvement in SCHNOS-C and a 7-point difference in SCHNOS-O.
  • Group B (facial exercises) showed an 8-point improvement in SCHNOS-C and a 15-point difference in SCHNOS-O.

Conclusions:

  • This randomized controlled trial suggests that nasal muscle exercises do not provide a significant improvement in nasal obstruction.
  • Further research may be needed to explore alternative or adjunctive treatments for nasal valve obstruction.
