Accessory Structures of the Eye01:17

Accessory Structures of the Eye

1.7K
Optical perception, or vision, is an extraordinary sense dependent on converting light signals received via the ocular organs. These organs, known as eyes, are securely positioned within the bony cavities of the skull, called orbits. The orbits serve a dual purpose: a protective shield for the ocular globes and a stable attachment point for the soft ocular tissues. The eye's external protective mechanisms include the eyelids, which are edged with lashes that act as a barrier against foreign...

Muscles of the Eye01:20

Muscles of the Eye

1.7K
The muscles of the eye are sophisticated structures that control eye movement and focus, allowing for the precise and rapid adjustments necessary for vision. The human eye is controlled by ten muscles — six extraocular muscles, three intraocular muscles, and one primary eyelid retractor muscle.
Extraocular Muscles
The six extraocular muscles surround the eyeball and control its movements. They are responsible for a wide range of eye motions, including looking up, down, left, right, and...

Summary

Deep lateral orbital decompression alters palpebral fissure shape, reducing eyelid margin positions and lateral canthus height. These changes are similar whether the lateral orbital rim is restored or not.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Orbital Surgery

Background:

  • Deep lateral orbital decompression is a surgical technique used to reduce proptosis.
  • The impact of lateral orbital rim restoration on post-decompression palpebral fissure shape is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare palpebral fissure shape after rim-off deep lateral orbital decompression with and without lateral orbital rim restoration.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of palpebral fissure images from 17 patients (G1) without rim restoration and 20 patients (G2) with rim restoration.
  • Quantitative analysis included MRD1, MRD2, lateral mid-pupil lid margin distances, palpebral fissure width, and lateral canthus height/shape.

Main Results:

  • Proptosis reduction was similar in both groups.
  • Decompression reduced MRD1, MRD2, upper eyelid lateral height, and lateral canthus height/angle in both groups.
  • Palpebral fissure width and lateral lower eyelid height were unaffected; no significant intergroup differences were observed.

Conclusions:

  • Palpebral fissure shape changes after deep lateral orbital decompression are not significantly influenced by the presence or absence of the lateral orbital rim.
