Rheumatic Heart Disease I: Introduction

29
Rheumatic heart disease or RHD is a chronic condition that results from rheumatic fever, causing permanent damage to the heart valves.Etiology and Risk FactorsIt primarily arises from rheumatic fever, an inflammatory disease that can develop after untreated or inadequately treated group A streptococcal (GAS) pharyngitis. Streptococcus spreads through direct contact with oral or respiratory secretions. While the bacteria are the causative agents, factors like malnutrition, overcrowding, poor...

Genome-wide Association Studies-GWAS

14.0K
Genome-wide association studies or GWAS are used to identify whether common SNPs are associated with certain diseases. Suppose specific SNPs are more frequently observed in individuals with a particular disease than those without the disease. In that case, those SNPs are said to be associated with the disease. Chi-square analysis is performed to check the probability of the allele likely to be associated with the disease.
GWAS does not require the identification of the target gene involved in...

Rheumatic Heart Disease II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

43
The key clinical manifestations of Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) include several distinct cardiac symptoms.Carditis, a hallmark of acute rheumatic fever, involves inflammation of the heart's endocardium, myocardium, and pericardium. Chronic RHD often results from recurrent episodes of carditis. Its symptoms include the following:Murmurs are caused by valvular damage, especially to the mitral and aortic valves. Mitral stenosis or regurgitation is common, with characteristic heart murmurs...

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Urology
  • Men's Health

Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting joints.
  • Erectile and ejaculatory dysfunctions are increasingly recognized in chronic conditions.
  • The prevalence of premature ejaculation dysfunction (PED) in RA patients is not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of premature ejaculation dysfunction (PED) in patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
  • To explore potential associations between PED and clinical factors in RA patients.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 168 RA patients.
  • Data collected included demographics, medical history, physical measurements (BMI, blood pressure), and laboratory tests (CBC, ESR, blood sugar, HBs Ag, anti-HCV).
  • RA disease activity was assessed using the DAS-28 calculator, and PED was evaluated using the Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of premature ejaculation dysfunction (PED) among rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients was found to be 44.6%.
  • The mean PED score was 9.17.
  • Positive associations were observed between PED and hypertension, Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection, traditional herbal medications, and the use of disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
  • Higher Body Mass Index (BMI) and higher DAS-28 scores showed a negative association with PED.

Conclusions:

  • There is a high prevalence of premature ejaculation dysfunction (PED) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
  • These findings underscore the need for systematic evaluation and treatment of PED in RA patients.
  • Further research is recommended to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and optimize management strategies.
