Background:

Ankle joint osteoarthritis (AOA) affects 9-15% of the general population.
Ankle joint distraction arthroplasty (ADA) is a method to delay radical intervention for AOA.
A comprehensive review is needed due to the limited synthesis of clinical data on ADA over its 50-year history.

Approach:

A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines.
Searched 3 sources, identifying 4640 publications; 33 were selected for full-text analysis.
Analyzed 32 publications detailing ADA in 927 patients, aged 44.9 ± 12.7 years.

Key Points:

Post-traumatic AOA was the most common indication (81.3%).
Other causes included osteochondral defects, poliomyelitis, congenital deformities, hemophilia, and various forms of OA.
