Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the impact of loupe magnification on the incidence of hypocalcemia and vocal cord palsy following total thyroidectomy.
To determine if enhanced visualization through magnification improves surgical outcomes in thyroid cancer surgery.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 50 patients undergoing total thyroidectomy for thyroid malignancy over one year.
Patients were divided into two groups: those operated with loupe magnification and those without.

Pre- and post-operative assessment of hypocalcemia and vocal cord palsy, with statistical analysis using the chi-square test.

Main Results:

The incidence of hypocalcemia was significantly lower in the magnification group (7.6%) compared to the non-magnification group (36.9%).
Transient vocal cord injury occurred in 33% of patients without loupes versus a lower, though not explicitly stated, incidence with magnification (p < 0.05).
Magnification facilitated better visualization of neurovascular anatomy during surgery.

Conclusions:

Loupe magnification is a crucial tool for improving visualization of neurovascular anatomy during thyroid surgery.
The use of loupe magnification can substantially decrease the morbidity associated with total thyroidectomy.
Routine adoption of loupe magnification in thyroid surgery is recommended to enhance patient safety and outcomes.
