Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay

13.9K
In 1971, Peter Perlman and Eva Engvall developed an Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA or EIA). ELISA differs from western blot in that the assays are conducted in microtiter plates or in vivo rather than on an absorbent membrane.
There are many different types of ELISAs, but they all involve an antibody molecule whose constant region binds an enzyme, leaving the variable region free to bind its specific antigen.  Enzyme-substrate reaction allows the antigen to be visualized or...

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Allergy Diagnostics

Background:

  • Food allergy is a significant global health concern.
  • Over 160 food groups are known to cause allergic reactions, sensitivities, or intolerances.
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is a standard method for diagnosing food allergies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the development and application of a multiplex allergen ELISA.
  • To enable simultaneous screening for multiple food allergens and intolerances.

Main Methods:

  • Preparation of a multiplex allergen ELISA.
  • Utilizing multiplex immunoassays for simultaneous screening.

Main Results:

  • The multiplex ELISA allows for the assessment of multiple food allergies and sensitivities.
  • Simultaneous screening of patients for various allergens is feasible.

Conclusions:

  • Multiplex allergen ELISA is a valuable tool for assessing food allergy and sensitivity.
  • This method enhances the diagnostic capabilities for complex food allergies.
