Alcohol use is prevalent in Shanghai
Area of Science:
- Addiction medicine
- Public health
- Clinical psychology
Background:
- Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) clients often exhibit high rates of alcohol consumption.
- Understanding alcohol use patterns in this population is crucial for effective treatment.
- Previous research on interventions for alcohol use in MMT clients is limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of alcohol consumption among MMT clients in Shanghai.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of a brief intervention (BI) in reducing alcohol intake in this population.
Main Methods:
- 837 MMT clients in Shanghai were invited to participate; 101 were randomized into a BI group or a control group.
- The BI group received a brief intervention plus general health education; the control group received only general health education.
- Assessments included the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and other psychological measures at baseline and follow-up.
Main Results:
- 30.9% of clients reported drinking in the past year, with 12.3% meeting criteria for harmful use.
- Both groups showed significant reductions in AUDIT scores over 3 months, but no significant difference between groups.
- Improvements in depression, anxiety, and general well-being were observed in both groups, with no significant group differences.
Conclusions:
- Alcohol consumption is common among MMT clients in China.
- The current brief intervention format was not effective in reducing alcohol consumption in this MMT client population.
- Further research is needed to develop more effective interventions for alcohol use in MMT clients.
