Teachers need positive mental health literacy (MHL) for effective teaching. A validated scale (MHPKS) shows positive MHL links to well-being and job satisfaction, complementing knowledge of mental disorders.
Area of Science:
- Educational Psychology
- Mental Health Research
- Teacher Training
Background:
- Teacher mental health literacy (MHL) is crucial, yet often focuses narrowly on disorders.
- A gap exists in measuring positive MHL, essential for mental health promotion.
- Existing measures do not fully capture the scope of teacher MHL.
Purpose of the Study:
- To adapt and validate the Mental Health-Promoting Knowledge Scale (MHPKS) for measuring positive MHL in teachers.
- To examine the factor structure of the MHPKS in a preservice teacher population.
- To investigate the relationship between positive MHL, knowledge of mental disorders, and teacher well-being and engagement.
Main Methods:
- Adaptation and validation of the MHPKS using confirmatory factor analysis.
- Survey administered to 470 Filipino preservice teachers.
- Correlational and predictive analyses to assess construct validity.
Main Results:
- The MHPKS demonstrated strong support for a single-factor model, indicating good construct validity.
- Positive MHL was significantly associated with greater knowledge of mental disorders, well-being, teaching engagement, and satisfaction.
- Positive MHL uniquely predicted well-being, engagement, and satisfaction, independent of knowledge of mental disorders.
Conclusions:
- The MHPKS is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing teachers' positive mental health literacy.
- This scale complements existing measures of mental disorder knowledge for a comprehensive MHL assessment.
- Enhancing positive MHL in teachers may improve their well-being and teaching effectiveness.
