    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the oral xylose absorption test in foals.

    • Seven healthy foals (ponies and horses) underwent oral D-xylose testing at 1, 2, and 3 months of age.
    • Following an 8-hour fast, 0.5 g/kg D-xylose was administered via nasogastric tube.
    • Plasma xylose concentrations were measured for 3 hours post-administration using the phloroglucinol microassay.

    Main Results:

    • Peak plasma xylose concentrations were observed between 30 and 60 minutes post-administration.
    • Mean peak xylose concentrations significantly decreased with age: 3.14 mmol/L at 1 month, 2.19 mmol/L at 2 months, and 1.25 mmol/L at 3 months.
    • Xylose absorption capacity in foals at 3 months approximated adult horse levels.

    Conclusions:

    • The oral xylose absorption test is a viable method for assessing small intestinal absorptive capacity in foals.
    • Age-specific interpretation of results is essential for accurate diagnosis.
    • This study provides age-related reference values for foal xylose absorption.
