Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmic wearables
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Materials science

Background:

  • Smart contact lenses are emerging as noninvasive tools for diagnosing and treating ocular diseases.
  • Current limitations in smart contact lens technology necessitate the development of multifunctional materials.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop multifunctional contact lenses with UV-transition and temperature-responsive properties.
  • To evaluate the optical and functional performance of these smart contact lenses.

Main Methods:

  • Integration of chromogenic materials into poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) contact lenses.
  • Optical evaluation of UV-blocking and light absorption capabilities in activated and non-activated states.
  • Assessment of colorimetric changes in response to physiological temperature variations (33-38°C).

Main Results:

  • Contact lenses demonstrated effective UV and blue light blocking (~45%) in their inactive state.
  • UV activation caused instantaneous darkening and visible light absorption, dependent on photochromic material.
  • Temperature-responsive lenses showed distinct color changes with a maximum sensitivity of 8% transmitted light per degree Celsius.

Conclusions:

  • Developed multifunctional contact lenses exhibit UV-transition and temperature-responsive functionalities.
  • These smart contact lenses are suitable for managing ophthalmic conditions influenced by UV radiation and temperature fluctuations.
  • The study highlights the potential of these advanced wearables for ocular health management.
