Summary

Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients without optic neuritis often have vision problems. Functional vision tests reveal significant visual field defects and reduced contrast sensitivity in these individuals.

Background:

  • Acute optic neuritis is a common ocular symptom in multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • Subclinical optic neuritis in MS patients is slow, bilateral, and often unnoticed.
  • Assessing vision impairment in MS patients without a history of acute optic neuritis is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate vision impairment in multiple sclerosis patients without a history of acute optic neuritis.
  • To utilize functional vision tests for detecting subclinical visual deficits.

Main Methods:

  • Included 35 MS patients (aged 18-50) with normal visual acuity and no subjective vision impairment.
  • Employed Octopus 101 perimetry (N1 program) for visual field testing.
  • Utilized Pelli Robson charts for contrast sensitivity and Ishihara plates for color vision testing.

Main Results:

  • Visual field defects were detected in 28 patients (80%).
  • Common defects included peripheral retinal sensitivity depression and nerve fiber bundle defects.
  • Reduced contrast sensitivity was found in 86% of patients.

Conclusions:

  • Multiple sclerosis patients without apparent optic neuritis experience significant vision function impairment.
  • Octopus perimetry and Pelli Robson contrast sensitivity testing are effective in detecting these subclinical deficits.
