Background:

Patient navigation programs are recognized for enhancing access to chronic disease treatment by removing care barriers.
Established programs have demonstrated success in improving cancer screening rates and diagnostic resolution.

Approach:

A systematic review and meta-analysis of 59 articles from PubMed and Embase (August 2009–March 2023) was conducted.
Studies focused on patient navigators' impact on cancer treatment initiation, adherence, satisfaction, quality indicators, palliative care, and outcomes in disadvantaged populations.

Key Points:

70% of studies showed improved cancer treatment initiation with patient navigation.
71% of studies reported enhanced treatment adherence, and 87% found increased patient satisfaction.
81% of studies indicated positive impacts on quality of care indicators, with notable benefits for disadvantaged populations.

Conclusions:

Patient navigation significantly improves multiple facets of cancer care, including access, adherence, and outcomes.
These programs are crucial for reducing healthcare disparities and enhancing the overall quality of cancer treatment.
Integrating patient navigation into standard oncology practice is recommended to optimize patient care and outcomes.
