Background:

  • Interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) is crucial for improving healthcare outcomes.
  • Interprofessional education (IPE) is a foundational element for fostering IPCP.
  • Effective IPE should encourage meaningful exchange of ideas among students from different health professions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of a photovoice-based IPE on the attitudes and beliefs of students in physical therapy and radiation therapy programs.
  • To assess changes in student perceptions regarding interprofessional education and collaboration.

Main Methods:

  • A photovoice methodology was employed with Doctor of Physical Therapy and Radiation Therapy students.
  • Students created and discussed photovoice slides, followed by small and large group discussions.
  • Pretest-posttest surveys, including the SPICE-R2, were administered to measure changes in perceptions.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant improvement in overall SPICE-R2 scores was observed from pretest to posttest (p<0.001).
  • All sub-factor scores of the SPICE-R2 demonstrated statistically significant differences.
  • Thematic analysis indicated students gained knowledge of other professions, found the IPE meaningful, and suggested areas for improvement.

Conclusions:

  • The photovoice IPE effectively promoted student reflection and interprofessional collaboration.
  • The experience led to enhanced understanding and new perceptions of other health professions.
  • Implementing similar IPE activities earlier in educational programs is recommended for future studies.
