Association of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Genotypes With Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Risk

The matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) rs3918242 genotype does not increase nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) risk. However, the MMP-9 CT genotype showed a protective effect against NPC, especially in non-betel quid chewers.

Purpose of the Study:

- A case-control study design was employed, including 208 NPC patients and 416 healthy controls.
- Statistical analyses, including odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI), were used to assess risk.
Main Results:
- No significant association was found between MMP-9 rs3918242 CT or TT genotypes and overall NPC risk compared to the CC genotype.
- The variant T allele of MMP-9 rs3918242 did not alter NPC risk.
- A significant protective effect of the MMP-9 rs3918242 CT genotype against NPC was observed in individuals who did not chew betel quid (OR=0.51, 95%CI=0.30-0.87, p=0.0166).
Conclusions:
- The MMP-9 rs3918242 polymorphism does not appear to be a major risk factor for NPC in the studied population.
- The MMP-9 rs3918242 CT genotype may confer a protective effect against NPC, particularly in non-betel quid chewers.
- Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying this observed protective association.
