[Lactoferrin in human lung tumors].

    Summary

    Lactoferrin (LF) concentration is higher in human lung tumors than normal lung tissue. However, LF is found in immune cells, not cancer cells, suggesting it is not a tumor-specific antigen.

    Background:

    • Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding protein with diverse biological functions, including immune modulation.
    • The role of LF in human lung cancer remains incompletely understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the distribution of lactoferrin in normal and cancerous human lung tissues.
    • To determine if LF is associated with lung tumor cells or surrounding immune cells.

    Main Methods:

    • Immunodiffusion technique was employed to quantify LF in tissue extracts.
    • Indirect immunoperoxidase staining was used to localize LF within tissue sections.

    Main Results:

    • LF concentration was significantly higher in lung tumor extracts compared to normal lung tissue.
    • LF was detected in alveolar macrophages within both normal and tumor lung tissues.
    • LF was also found in immune cells infiltrating the tumor microenvironment, but not within the lung cancer cells themselves.

    • LF is not a lung tumor-associated antigen, as it is not detected in the cancer cells.
