Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Signal Processing

Background:

  • Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is ideal for motor task brain activity measurement due to portability and motion tolerance.
  • Variable trial durations in fNIRS experiments hinder direct comparison and averaging of hemodynamic responses across repetitions.
  • Standardized data processing is crucial for reliable fNIRS analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce TaskNorm.m, a novel MATLAB function for time-normalizing fNIRS data from trials of differing lengths.
  • To enable accurate averaging and comparison of hemodynamic responses in fNIRS studies with variable trial durations.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a MATLAB function (TaskNorm.m) utilizing spline interpolation.
  • Rescaling the time-axis of fNIRS data to a fixed percentage of trial duration with a consistent number of samples.
  • Testing the function on eight children (typically developing and with developmental coordination disorder) performing three distinct motor tasks.

Main Results:

  • The TaskNorm function successfully normalizes time-series fNIRS data, allowing for effective averaging and comparison across repetitions.
  • The function's performance is robust and independent of the specific task or preceding data pre-processing steps.
  • Validated on a cohort including children with and without developmental coordination disorder.

Conclusions:

  • TaskNorm.m provides a reliable solution for standardizing fNIRS data analysis in motor tasks with variable trial durations.
  • The function integrates with the HomER3 package, contributing to the ongoing standardization of fNIRS data processing.
  • This tool facilitates more accurate and reproducible research in neuroimaging.
