Background:
Expert Modeling Videos (EMVs) enhance students' simulation preparation and competency development; however, the optimal delivery method remains unclear.
Purpose:
To examine how the format of EMVs (single comprehensive vs. role-specific) impacts nursing students' simulation competency and engagement in simulation preparation prior to their simulation experience.
Method:
A quasi-experimental design with 145 junior nursing students. The control group received a comprehensive EMV demonstrating exemplar patient care, while the experimental group received role-specific EMVs, each highlighting exemplar care within 1 out of 4 nursing roles. Competency and engagement were measured using the Creighton Competency Evaluation Instrument and student surveys, respectively.
Results:
No significant difference in overall competency was found, but the comprehensive EMV group performed better in assessment ( P = .011). Student engagement with the EMVs for simulation preparation was high in both groups (98% control, 90% experimental).
Conclusion:
While EMVs effectively support simulation preparation and competency, comprehensive EMVs may better enhance assessment skills.

Steps in the Modeling Process
Attention is the first necessary component for observational learning. It involves focusing on what the model is doing and saying. For example, if you decide to take a drawing class to enhance your skills, you need to pay close attention to the instructor's words and hand movements. The characteristics of the model significantly...

The steps involved in shaping begin with reinforcing any response that resembles the desired behavior. For example, parents might praise a child for picking up one toy. As...
