Effects of targeted therapy for RCC on LUTS in elderly male patients
1Molecular Pathology Laboratory of Pathology Department, The People's Hospital of Qinghai, Xining, P.R.China.
Objective:
Study on the effect of targeted drugs on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in elderly men.
Methods And Materials:
A retrospective study was conducted on elderly male patients aged 60 and above with pathologically diagnosed renal cell carcinoma who received targeted drug therapy. Analyze the prostate volume, international prostate symptom score (IPSS), physical fitness score, and other indicators of these patients before and after receiving targeted therapy. So as to study the effect of targeted drugs on LUTS.
Results:
A total of 47 patients were surveyed, with an average age of 70.32 ± 7.724 years, and age was significantly correlated with worsening of LUTS. The medication duration is 2-49 months; The average duration of medication was 13.72 ± 9.611 months. With the prolongation of targeted drug treatment time, the occurrence and aggravation of LUTS significantly increase.he logistic regression analysis results indicate that age and duration of medication are both risk factors for the deterioration of LUTS.
Conclusions:
It should be cause for concern that use of anti-vascular targeting drugs in elderly men may promote the side effects of LUTS.
Insights
Targeted drugs for renal cell carcinoma may worsen lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in elderly men. Increased age and longer treatment duration are linked to a higher risk of LUTS development and exacerbation.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Urology
- Geriatrics
Background:
- Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a significant health concern in elderly men.
- Targeted therapies have improved RCC treatment outcomes.
- Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are prevalent in aging male populations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the impact of targeted drug therapy on LUTS in elderly men with RCC.
- To identify risk factors associated with LUTS development and progression during targeted therapy.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 47 elderly male patients (≥60 years) with pathologically diagnosed RCC.
- Evaluation of prostate volume, International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), and physical fitness before and after targeted therapy.
- Logistic regression analysis to determine risk factors for LUTS deterioration.
Main Results:
- A significant correlation was observed between advanced age and worsening LUTS.
- Prolonged targeted drug treatment duration (average 13.7 months) was associated with increased occurrence and severity of LUTS.
- Age and medication duration were identified as independent risk factors for LUTS deterioration.
Conclusions:
- The use of anti-vascular targeting drugs in elderly men with RCC may promote LUTS as a side effect.
- Clinicians should monitor for LUTS in elderly male patients undergoing targeted therapy.
- Further research is warranted to explore the mechanisms and management of therapy-induced LUTS.

Factors Affecting Renal Clearance: Renal Impairment
One condition associated with renal failure is uremia. Uremia is characterized by impaired glomerular filtration and fluid accumulation in the body. This condition hinders the renal clearance of drugs, resulting in drug accumulation and potential...
Renal Failure: Dose Adjustments
Reduced renal clearance and elimination rate are common outcomes of renal impairment. These alterations lead to a prolonged elimination half-life and an altered apparent volume of distribution for drugs. As a result, dosage adjustments are typically necessary to maintain optimal drug levels in the body.
However, dosage adjustments...
