We developed polymer nanocomposites with enhanced solvent resistance by infiltrating polymers into nanoparticle structures. Solvent-surface interactions, not just polymer-solvent affinity, are key to preventing polymer dissolution.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Polymer Science
- Nanotechnology
Background:
- Polymer-based materials often exhibit poor solvent resistance, leading to swelling, deformation, and dissolution.
- Existing materials struggle to maintain integrity when exposed to aggressive solvents.
Purpose of the Study:
- To enhance the solvent resistance of polymer materials.
- To investigate the role of nanoparticle-solvent interactions in polymer retention within nanocomposites.
Main Methods:
- Infiltrating polymers into the interstices of densely packed nanoparticles.
- Analyzing polymer removal based on polymer-solvent and solvent-nanoparticle interactions.
- Tuning nanoparticle surface chemistry, confinement scale, and polymer identity.
Main Results:
- Polymer nanocomposites (PINFs) demonstrated dramatically enhanced solvent resistance, even against good solvents.
- Solvent-nanoparticle interactions were found to be crucial in displacing adsorbed polymer chains.
- Stronger solvent affinity for the nanoparticle surface facilitated polymer displacement, overriding polymer-solvent thermodynamics.
Conclusions:
- Solvent-surface interactions are a critical, overlooked parameter for engineering robust polymer nanocomposites.
- The interplay of polymer adsorption, confinement, and solvent-surface affinity governs solvent resistance.
- This approach enables the creation of polymer nanocomposites that retain polymer content under harsh solvent exposure.

Solubility
A solution is a homogeneous mixture composed of a solvent, the major component, and a solute, the minor component. The physical state of a solution—solid, liquid, or gas—is typically the same as that of the solvent. Solute concentrations are often described with qualitative terms such as dilute (of relatively low concentration) and concentrated (of relatively high concentration).
In a solution, the solute particles (molecules,...

Intermolecular Forces in Solutions
When the strengths of the intermolecular forces of attraction between solute and solvent species in a solution are no different than those present in the separated components, the solution is formed with no accompanying energy change. Such a solution is called an ideal solution. A mixture of ideal gases (or gases such as helium and argon,...
