Practical Guide for the Use of Ultrasound in Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis

Ultrasound is a valuable imaging tool in psoriatic arthritis (PsA). It optimizes clinical evaluation of patients by accurately detecting inflammatory and structural changes characteristic of PsA in the joints, entheses, and tendons. Musculoskeletal ultrasound can help identify psoriasis patients at high risk of progression. It can also assist with PsA diagnosis by differentiating it from other musculoskeletal conditions. While ultrasound can be used to objectively evaluate musculoskeletal activity, its role in monitoring response to therapy beyond clinical assessment is less established. Further research is needed to develop accepted sonographic scoring systems and evaluate its utility in the management of PsA.
