Abstract:
Pediatric neurogastroenterology is an evolving field focused on the management of disorders of the enteric nervous system in children, including disorders of the gut-brain interaction (DGBI) and dysmotility. Since 2015, several medications have shown promise or have been approved for treatment of adults with DGBI or dysmotility. They include secretagogues, serotonin agonists, and sodium channel antagonists for constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation; antibiotics and opioid agonists for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea; cannabinoid agonists for functional abdominal pain; and neurokinin-1 antagonists for nausea and cyclic vomiting syndrome.
