Using Student-Generated Memes to Facilitate Discussions Among Undergraduate Nursing Students in an Ethics Class
1Author Affiliations: Lienhard School of Nursing, Pace University, New York (Dr Velasquez and Ms Smith).
Background:
Using memes has become a popular way to convey ideas, thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors through online transmission.
Problem:
There is a lack of empirical data about the effectiveness of using memes to facilitate learner engagement in nursing education.
Approach:
To enhance learner engagement, an in-class activity incorporating student-generated memes was implemented. The outcome was evaluated using Brookfield's critical incident questionnaire, which assessed student perceptions following participation in the activity.
Outcomes:
Eighty-two undergraduate nursing students completed the questionnaire at the end of the activity. Students described an increased level of engagement during the in-class discussion and reported that the activity provided deeper insights into the material, contributing to their learning.
Conclusion:
Nurse educators can leverage memes to enhance learner engagement, facilitate active learning, and promote positive educational experiences.
