Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the levels of TNF-α in male patients diagnosed with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke.
  • To compare TNF-α concentrations between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke subtypes.

Main Methods:

  • Blood/serum samples were collected from 48 male stroke patients (27 ischemic, 21 hemorrhagic) in the Republic of Georgia.
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to quantify TNF-α levels.
  • Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism 9, with significance set at p < 0.05.

Main Results:

  • Both stroke types exhibited elevated TNF-α levels compared to the reference (<8 pg/mL).
  • Ischemic stroke patients showed significantly higher TNF-α levels (15.26±8.68 pg/mL) than hemorrhagic stroke patients (9.18±5.66 pg/mL).
  • A 1.66-fold increase in TNF-α was observed in ischemic stroke patients.

Conclusions:

  • Significantly elevated TNF-α levels are associated with both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes in male patients.
  • Ischemic stroke is associated with more pronounced increases in TNF-α.
  • Targeting TNF-α may aid in identifying high-risk patients and developing new therapeutic strategies for stroke recovery.
