Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have made significant advancement in recent years and are widely applied in engineering, science, education, etc. Specifically, their unique and unlimited potential in simulating various clinical scenarios draws attention in the field of dental education. Realistic experience does not just replace traditional learning but brings it up to a higher, broader, and deeper level. This review article overviews the development of VR, AR, mixed reality, and extended reality in dental education, the current systems, the literature of its impact, and future directions.
