Synthetic Biology

5.5K
Synthetic biology is an interdisciplinary science that involves using principles from disciplines such as engineering, molecular biology, cell biology, and systems biology. It involves remodeling existing organisms from nature or constructing completely new synthetic organisms for applications such as protein or enzyme production, bioremediation, value-added macromolecule production, and the addition of desirable traits to crops, to name a few.

Applications Of NMR In Biology

4.4K
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a very valuable analytical technique for researchers. It has been used for more than 50 years as an analytical tool. F. Bloch and E. Purcell formulated NMR in 1946 and won the 1952 Nobel Prize in Physics  for their work. Biological macromolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and organic molecules including pharmaceutical compounds, can be studied using this versatile tool that exploits the magnetic properties of certain nuclei.

Area of Science:

  • Science Education
  • Curriculum Development

Background:

  • Thun High School has implemented interdisciplinary, problem-based learning projects since 1998.
  • These projects are integrated into specialized biology-chemistry courses to prepare students for their Matura thesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present the didactic concept of interdisciplinary, problem-based learning projects.
  • To highlight the development of subject-specific content and interdisciplinary skills.

Main Methods:

  • Integration of 11 large-scale and several smaller projects into the biology-chemistry curriculum.
  • Gradual withdrawal of teachers from direct instruction to increase student responsibility.
  • Presentation of a concrete example, student feedback, and challenges/opportunities.

Main Results:

  • Development of subject-specific knowledge in biology and chemistry.
  • Enhancement of interdisciplinary skills including self-organized learning, literature research, and collaboration.
  • Successful preparation of students for Matura thesis completion and oral examinations.

Conclusions:

  • Interdisciplinary, problem-based learning effectively prepares students for academic challenges.
  • This pedagogical approach fosters essential skills beyond subject matter, crucial for future success.
  • The model offers valuable insights for educators seeking to implement similar programs.
