Abstract:
Precision surgery in thoracic oncology leverages molecular and genetic characteristics to personalize surgical interventions and improve therapeutic outcomes. However, the current precision surgery paradigm does not account for the significant influence of social determinants of health (SDOH) on biological and surgical outcomes. In this review, we propose recommendations to integrate SDOH into precision surgery to optimize thoracic cancer care for better outcomes. We introduce "socio-precision surgery (SPS)" as an approach that embeds health equity principles into personalized surgical care. SPS integrates SDOH into preoperative planning, intraoperative decision-making, and postoperative management through artificial intelligence models to improve outcomes in marginalized populations.
