[Point-of-Care Ultrasound in primary care : 2025 update]

Point-of-Care Ultrasound offers a real-time, non-invasive clinical assessment that enhances diagnostic accuracy, treatment quality, and general practitioner (GP) autonomy, while boosting their professional satisfaction as well as patient trust. In 2027, Point-of-Care Ultrasound certification will become mandatory for GPs in Switzerland. While this is a promising development, several challenges hinder its implementation, including a misalignment between the content of component 1 and the specific needs of GPs, a shortage of supervisors, medicolegal concerns, difficulties funding ultrasound equipment, ensuring information technology integration and uncertainty concerning billing. A component specific to outpatient general medicine could be developed based on a Delphi process, led by a committee of GPs, who are experts in POCUS.
