This study introduces the Resilience Scale for University Youths (RSUY), a new tool to measure resilience in Eastern health care students. The RSUY is a valid and reliable scale for assessing student well-being and professional development.
Area of Science:
- Psychometric assessment
- Health professions education
- Mental health research
Background:
- Resilience assessments for Eastern health care students are limited.
- Resilience is crucial for student well-being and professional development.
- The Kawa model provides a culturally adapted framework.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the Resilience Scale for University Youths (RSUY) for health care undergraduates.
- To develop and psychometrically assess a culturally relevant resilience scale.
- To address the gap in resilience assessment tools for this population.
Main Methods:
- A seven-step scale development process incorporating cultural and professional elements.
- Psychometric assessment design with reliability testing, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).
- Online survey data collected from 207 health care undergraduates.
Main Results:
- The 21-item RSUY demonstrated strong internal consistency (α = .86).
- The five-factor structure (Harmony, Riverside & Bottom, Driftwood, Rocks, Space) explained 55.29% of the variance.
- The scale supported convergent and discriminant validity, confirmed by CFA.
Conclusions:
- The RSUY is a valid and reliable tool for assessing resilience in health care youth.
- Findings support the scale's utility for evaluating resilience in this specific demographic.
- The RSUY can inform culturally relevant support strategies for health care students.
