Psychological Impacts of Premature Birth on Mothers: A Literature Review

Background/Purpose:
Premature birth poses a health challenge for mothers, with far-reaching implications for their mental well-being. This literature review aims to examine the mental health consequences of preterm birth in mothers and highlights relevant interventions.
Methods:
Α literature review was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO databases. The search was restricted to studies published in the last 20 years (2003-2023).
Results:
This review assessed interventions for mothers of preterm infants, emphasizing early interventions, relaxation therapy, and skin-to-skin care. These approaches effectively reduced maternal stress, enhanced mother-infant interaction, and strengthened the parent-child bond. The role of perceived social care and support emerged in reducing postpartum depression symptoms.
Conclusions:
This literature review emphasized the diverse impact of preterm birth on maternal mental health, highlighting interventions, such as family nurture and massage. Maternal involvement, coupled with psychological support, is crucial for addressing postpartum challenges. Integrating psychological interventions into routine care seemed essential for supporting mothers. Overall, this review underscores the need for additional research to enhance understanding and develop sustainable strategies for maternal mental health in the context of preterm birth.
