Collagen grafting with recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB) shows potential benefits for oral mucosal defect reconstruction. While not statistically significant, rhPDGF-BB augmentation slightly improved healing outcomes compared to collagen alone.
Area of Science:
- Oral surgery
- Regenerative medicine
- Wound healing
Background:
- Oral mucosal defects require effective reconstruction methods.
- Collagen grafts are utilized for tissue repair.
- Growth factors may enhance regenerative processes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate collagen grafting for oral mucosal defects.
- To compare outcomes of rhPDGF-BB augmented collagen grafting versus collagen alone.
Main Methods:
- 30 patients with intraoral lesions were randomly assigned to two groups.
- Group I: collagen sheet with rhPDGF-BB.
- Group II: collagen sheet alone. Assessed hemostasis, pain, granulation, epithelialization, and contracture.
Main Results:
- Collagen grafting promoted hemostasis, pain relief, granulation, and epithelialization.
- rhPDGF-BB group showed slightly better granulation, epithelialization, and less contracture, though not statistically significant (p > 0.05).
Conclusions:
- Collagen graft augmented with rhPDGF-BB may benefit oral cavity reconstruction for small resections.
- Further research with larger sample sizes is recommended to confirm efficacy.
