Abstract:
Non-congenital pediatric brain disorders have several etiologies, including genetic, metabolic, and toxic. These disorders often present with distinctive imaging signs that reflect specific underlying biochemical and structural abnormalities and provide critical diagnostic insights, especially in the early stages when clinical features are nonspecific. This pictorial essay highlights key neuroradiological signs such as the cortical ribbon sign in hyperammonemia, the batwing appearance in glutaric aciduria type 1, tigroid and leopard-skin patterns in leukodystrophies, and characteristic findings in the brainstem and basal ganglia, including the putaminal eye, face of the giant panda, and piglet sign. Familiarity with these signs enables radiologists to recognize these etiologies promptly, which in turn facilitates early diagnosis, guides appropriate metabolic or genetic testing, and enables timely therapeutic intervention.
