Abstract:
In 2009 and 2013, the AABB's Transfusion-Transmitted Diseases Committee provided publications on emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) for transfusion medicine. Since that time, they have produced additional EID fact sheets for organisms of potential concern. In this same period, humanity has experienced resurgence of known pathogens, pandemics of novel pathogens, and emergence of nonendemic pathogens in new regions of the world. The 2024 Emerging Infectious Disease special issue provide and in-depth assessment of 72 organisms. In this article, we summarize updated data on organisms of historic concern to the US blood supply, and 2 organism of increased concern to blood safety.
