Correlation of meconium-stained amniotic fluid with subclinical chorioamnionitis and associated cardiotocographic

Our study aims to correlate meconium-stained amniotic fluid with subclinical chorio-amnionitis and associated cardio-tocographic (CTG) changes in women of >34 week gestation. We found CTG abnormalities in 47.2% cases and 24.1% controls, showing a significant correlation between meconium stained amniotic fluid and CTG abnormalities. These were not significantly associated with subclinical chorio-amnionitis, though the neonatal outcome of these babies was worse. Consequently, it is essential to balance the use of CTG with clinical judgement and other diagnostic tools to avoid unnecessary Caesarean section, while ensuring the safety of both mother and foetus.
