Abstract:
Recent research shows the impact of early adverse experiences on the stress axis, brain development, and the immune system, contributing to lasting somatic and psychological vulnerability. Children in child welfare are more often exposed to early adverse experiences, which significantly increases their risk of developing psychiatric disorders. Our systematic review of the literature shows that more than one in two minors in the care of child protection systems has at least one psychiatric disorder, with unequal and often delayed access to care.
