Insights
Babies in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) experience distress due to hospitalization and medical care. Understanding infant experiences and parental roles is crucial for improving care and caregiver awareness.

Abstract:
How can we understand how babies experience hospitalization in pediatric intensive care units (Picus)? Without language, how can they communicate their distress and needs to us? Already vulnerable because of their dependence, babies find themselves cut off from their environment and their usual routine, and must cope with necessary but stressful medical care. This article presents some data from the literature on the experiences of infants in Picus and offers some thoughts on current methods and possible ways to improve their care. It encourages further exploration of the parental experience as a source of understanding and risk for the baby, and calls for greater awareness and training among caregivers.
